  • Hi.

Thanks for your wikia, it's full of useful informations !

I have been searching for a long time for informations about the last animal and it's the only english site where i could read about the phororushacos (actually i've waited years to know more about it than the "expert mode" screen).

So I have a question which may seem a bit odd : where did you discover this final boss for the first time ? (In a japanese game magazine/site ? Directly in the game by capturing it [GG for this !] ?)

Thanks for answering my question !

    • I do not have any game magazines related to Jambo Safari (or any other arcades). When I started playing Expert Mode many times (not on emulator, but on an arcade), I was thinking that I need at least two S rankings to encounter the elusive giant phorusrhacos when I couldn't find any useful site to help capture the legendary creatures (sabertooth, white lion, phororusrhacos) in the final level. What I found out that is that I don't need to get at least TWO S rankings to discover the giant phoroushracos without running out of time. When I started playing Expert Mode for awhile (probably 2012 still in the arcades...), what I found out is that I need to get at least one S ranking in the Shetani Riverside level without continuing in order to see this giant bird depending on my performance in the level and I realized that I can't get the phoroushracos when I get an S ranking in the Embamba Plains level (even with or without losing). I have played the original Jambo Safari many times at many arcades I find.

I know that I cannot get the S ranking during the white rhino level, because you can only capture one rhino in this level, Sorry for all the long abscence...

    • Thank you so much for your answer, and congratulations for beating the game !

It's quite impressive to think you're probably the first and only one to encounter and to mention this boss in the entire english web between 1999 and 2013 ! Thank you so much for that ! (I've just found out that a japanese guy wrote about it in his blog in 1999 but it seems the information didn't spread.)

If it's ok for you, maybe i'll write a little news (in french) about this and your discovery in my blog.

"Asante sana, tutaonana" as the game says !

PS : 2nd try without links as my first attempt has failed.

    • Initially I just discovered about the Phorushracos by just playing the game until I got a feeling of getting progressively better at it, playing it on an emulator.

I then discovered that ranks in the game are determined by your score. Basically, if you finish stage 3 with 170k, you unlock Phorushracos unless you continue. To S-rank the white rhinoceros you have to catch it fast and end up with at least 90k at the end.

To get double-S rank in all stages, here are the point requirements:

      Enbamba Plains (80,000)

      White Rhinoceros (110,000)

      Shetani Riverside (200,000 or more)

The key with Jambo Safari when playing for a high score is timing. Sure, you should go after higher star animals, but the big deal breaker is the time bonus.

      This was
      20171020 134912

My top score for the arcade

my top score at Paradise Lanes in Spartanburg, SC. They removed the machine shortly after I did this run. Now I'm tempted to go for 300k points! Yep, that's right. I really wish I could find this game around again to play somewhere...

    • Thank you both once again for all this insights !

I just wrote a small post (in french sorry ) about your discoveries Phorusrhacos, ranks and video footage). The director of the game, Ogasawara Shinichi, also answered my tweets. Make sure to read his replies at the bottom of the article, it's very interesting !

By the way, the guy from the old japanese blog  seemed to have a good strategy for getting 300k points (and more).

      Thanks you again !

In stage 1 I always go get the Naturalist's glasses over on the tree slightly left of me. It gives you a +35 event clear time bonus if you do it correctly.
